~ Hitoha Miyazumi (Mitsuha’s grandmother) They twist, tangle, sometimes unravel, break, and then connect again. So the braided cords that we make are the god’s art and represent the flow of time itself. Musubi is the old way of calling the local guardian god. Like many Shinkai films, Your Name, centers around adolescents and budding love, however, the meaning of the relationship between the two protagonists should not be narrowed down to romance alone. The film explores several themes including tradition, spirituality, nature, time-space, and causality through the story of Mitsuha and Taki, two teenagers with extremely different lives and who happen to witness a historically rare cosmic event at the same time. In his 2016 anime film hit, Kimi no na wa or Your Name, director Makoto Shinkai artfully engages with the concept and many forms of musubi. If you haven’t seen “Your Name” yet go watch it then come back to this entry ^_^ However with the past year and all that the world has gone through I felt like the magic that Shinkai brings out of his films might be an adequate first essay. Note: It was really tough to choose what anime to write about first >_< I really wanted to go over one of my personal favorites or write something more existential.
